Key Takeaways
- MTN and Airtel offer 5G in parts of Kampala but coverage is still limited to urban centres

- 4G is more important for daily use in Uganda right now
- A 5G phone future-proofs your purchase if you keep phones for 3+ years

5G Coverage in Uganda
MTN launched 5G in Kampala in late 2024 and has expanded to select urban areas. Airtel followed in 2025. Coverage is concentrated in the city centre, major malls, and business districts. If you live or work outside central Kampala, you will be on 4G most of the time.
5G speeds in Uganda are genuinely impressive when you're in range: 200 to 500 Mbps compared to 10 to 30 Mbps on 4G. But for browsing, streaming, and social media, 4G is already fast enough. The real benefit of 5G today is lower latency for video calls and mobile gaming.
Should You Buy a 5G Phone?
If you're buying a phone in the UGX 800K to 1.5M range, you'll get 5G included whether you need it or not. The Samsung A55, Redmi Note 13, and most phones above UGX 600K now support 5G. If you keep phones for 3 or more years, 5G coverage will be much wider by the time you upgrade next. So yes, get a 5G phone, but don't pay extra for it.
